What are cloth diapers and what types are available?

Cloth diapers are a sustainable alternative to disposable diapers. They are made of fabric, washed after use, and reused. There are various types of cloth nappies. On this page and in a free consultation at a popolini store, you can get more information about the systems to find the right cloth nappy for your baby.

Why should we use cloth diapers for our baby?

  • Environmentally friendly: Cloth diapers reduce waste and the environmental burden on landfills caused by disposable diapers.
  • Cost-effective: Although the initial investment is higher, you save money in the long run since the diapers can be used repeatedly.
  • Health: Cloth diapers do not contain harmful chemicals found in disposable diapers. Many parents report that cloth diapers are gentler on their baby's delicate skin.
  • Comfort: Modern cloth diapers are simple and easy to use. Try now and order a cloth diaper trial pack.

How do cloth diapers work?

Cloth diapers often consist of (1) an outer waterproof layer, (2) an absorbent inner layer, and (3) an additional insert for extra absorbency. You put them on like a disposable diaper. Cloth diapers are available with Velcro or snaps.

How many cloth diapers do we need?

The number of diapers you need depends on your baby and your personal preferences. Generally, about 20-24 diapers are recommended to ensure you have enough while the others are in the laundry.

How much do cloth diapers cost?

The price of cloth diapers can vary depending on the type you choose. On average, a cloth diaper costs between 10 and 30 euros. The initial investment is higher than with disposable diapers, but in the long run, you save money as you can reuse the diapers. Many municipalities offer diaper vouchers to support the purchase of cloth nappies. Be sure to inquire at your municipality before buying.

What size do we need?

Cloth nappies come in various sizes depending on weight in kilograms. In addition, you’ll find:

  • Newborn nappies for newborns and babies under 3 kg
  • One-size or UNI size are growing diapers starting at 3 kg
  • Kombolone are larger diapers for toddlers or adults

Do One-Size nappies fit from the start or do I need newborn diapers?

This depends on the baby’s weight and the parents’ preferences:

  • One-Size diapers are suitable for babies weighing about 3 kg and usually fit optimally from 2 to 4 months. For newborns, we recommend a Newborn size.
  • Newborn diapers fit from about 2 kg to 8 kg. Newborn diapers have the advantage of fitting well from the start. Many parents prefer a slim diaper with less fabric, so they buy Newborn diapers.

Can my baby sleep through the night with cloth diapers?

Yes. Many parents report that their babies sleep just as well, or even better, with cloth diapers than with disposables. You can use special night diapers or additional inserts for extra absorbency to ensure longer wear overnight. Tip: The Stay Dry insert creates a dry feeling as it channels moisture away, keeping the surface dry for longer.

How can I use cloth nappies away from home?

You can use cloth nappies on the go by using wetbags (waterproof bags) to store the used diapers. With a little preparation, using cloth diapers on trips and outings can be just as easy.

Do I have to choose between disposable and cloth diapers?

Not necessarily. Many parents choose a combination of both. They use cloth nappies at home and disposable ones for longer outings or at night, until they feel more confident with handling cloth diapers. By choosing cloth nappies, you save about 365 disposable diapers a year or 1000 diapers over the entire diapering period!

Do cloth diapers restrict movement?

No. Modern cloth nappies offer more freedom of movement than many parents assume, thanks to their flexible materials and adjustable fits. A properly fitting cloth nappy gently adapts to the baby’s body without restricting natural movements.

How do I know if the cloth diaper fits properly?

A properly fitting cloth diaper should fit snugly around the legs and waist without being tight.

  • Check that there are no folds at the leg openings, but also no gaps.
  • A cloth diaper sits lower than a disposable diaper – ideally just below the belly button.
  • For very small babies or newborns, the diaper should not compress or press on the belly button area.
  • Place a finger in the waist and leg openings. There should be enough room for one finger, but not so much that a lot of air can fit in.

  • Storage: Store dirty diapers in a well-ventilated bag or bin until washing, for example, in a nappy bag or laundry bag in a nappy bucket.
  • Washing: Wash the diapers at 60°C without fabric softener or bleach.
  • Drying: Dry the diapers in the air or in the dryer on a low heat (gentle cycle). Frequent use of the dryer can wear out cloth diapers more quickly, shortening their lifespan.

Can I use cloth diapers for my second child?

Cloth diapers are very durable if properly cared for. You can use them for multiple children or sell or pass them on after use.
