What are cloth diapers and what types are there?
Cloth diapers are a sustainable alternative to disposable diapers. They are made of fabric and are washed and reused after use. There are different types of cloth diapers. On this page and during a free consultation in a popolini store you will get more information about the systems, so you can find the right cloth diaper for your baby.
Why should I use cloth diapers?
- Eco-friendly: Cloth diapers reduce the mountain of garbage and the environmental impact of landfills caused by disposable diapers.
- Cost-effective: Even if the initial investment is higher, you save in the long run since you can reuse the diapers over and over.
- Health: Cloth diapers do not contain harmful chemicals found in disposable diapers. Many parents report that cloth diapers are more comfortable for their babies' delicate skin.
- Comfort: Modern cloth diapers work simply and easily.
How do cloth diapers work?
Cloth diapers often consist of (1) an outer waterproof layer, (2) an absorbent inner layer, and (3) an additional insert that provides extra absorbency. You put the diaper on just like a disposable diaper. Cloth diapers are available with hook-and-loop fasteners or snap buttons.
How many cloth diapers do I need?
The number of diapers needed depends on your baby and your personal preferences. Usually, about 20-24 diapers are recommended so that you have enough diapers while the others are in the wash.
How expensive are cloth diapers?
The price of cloth diapers can vary depending on which type you choose. On average, a cloth diaper costs between 10 and 30 euros. The initial investment is higher than with disposable diapers, but in the long run you save money because you can reuse the diapers multiple times. Many municipalities subsidize the purchase of cloth diapers with a diaper voucher or subsidy. It is best to ask your local municipality and get informed before buying.
What size do I need?
Cloth diapers are available in different sizes depending on body weight in kg. Furthermore, you will find:
- Newborn diapers for newborns and babies from 2,5kg to 8kg
- One-Size or UNI sizes are diapers that grow with your baby from 3 to 15kg
- Kombolone are larger diapers for teens or adults
Do One-Size diapers fit from the beginning, or do I need newborn diapers?
This depends on the baby's body weight and the parents' preferences:
- One Size diapers are suitable for babies with a body weight of approx. 3 kg and usually fit perfectly from 2 to 4 months. For newborns, however, we recommend a Newborn size.
- Newborn diapers fit from approx. 2,5 kg up to 8 kg. Newborn diapers have the advantage that they fit well right from the start. Many parents prefer a slim diaper with less fabric and therefore buy Newborn diapers.
Can my baby sleep through the night with cloth diapers?
Yes. Many parents report that their babies sleep just as well or even better with cloth diapers than with disposable diapers. You can use special night diapers or additional highly absorbent inserts to ensure a longer wearing time overnight. Tip: The Stay Dry insert creates a feeling of dryness, as it passes moisture through and the surface feels dry for longer.
How can I use cloth diapers on the go?
You can also use cloth diapers on the go by using wetbags (waterproof bags) to store the used diapers. With a little preparation, traveling and going on trips with cloth diapers is completely hassle-free.
Do I have to choose between disposable and cloth diapers?
Not necessarily. Many parents opt for a combination of both. They use cloth diapers when at home, and disposable diapers for longer trips or during the night until they feel more confident handling cloth diapers. If you choose cloth diapers, you save about 2500 disposable diapers per year or ~5000 diapers for the entire diapering period!
Does a cloth diaper restrict freedom of movement?
No. Modern cloth diapers offer more freedom of movement than many parents assume due to their flexible materials and adjustable fits. A properly fitting cloth diaper adapts gently to the baby's body without hindering natural movements.
How do I know if the cloth diaper fits properly?
A properly fitting cloth diaper should fit snugly against the legs and tummy without pinching.
- Check that there are no wrinkles at the base of the leg, but also no room for gaps.
- A cloth diaper sits lower than a disposable diaper – ideally just below the belly button.
- For very small babies or newborns, the diaper should not compress or squeeze the belly button area.
- Insert a finger into the diaper at the waist and leg cuffs. There should be enough room to slide one finger in, but not so much that a lot of air fits inside the diaper.
How do I care for my cloth diapers properly?
- Storage: Keep dirty diapers in a well-ventilated bag or pail until you wash them, for example in a wetbag or in a laundry net in a diaper pail.
- Washing: Wash the diapers at 60 degrees Celsius without fabric softener or bleach.
- Drying: Air dry the diapers or use a tumble dryer on a low temperature (gentle cycle). Frequent use of a dryer can cause cloth diapers to wear out much faster and shorten their lifespan.
Can I still use cloth diapers for a second child?
Cloth diapers are very durable if properly cared for. You can use them for multiple children or sell/pass them on after use.
